Welcome to Lumiose City

First introduced in 2013's X & Y, Lumiose was always meant to be Pokémon's grand metropolis — a Paris-inspired hub with a giant central tower. On the 3DS, the hardware couldn't quite deliver the dream. Z-A finally makes Lumiose the city Game Freak always wanted it to be.

You arrive as a new trainer just as an urban redevelopment plan is reshaping the city into a place built for humans and Pokémon to live side by side. You check into Hotel Z, join up with Team MZ, and quickly get pulled into two intertwining mysteries: the nightly ranking competition known as the Z-A Royale, and a strange phenomenon causing wild Pokémon to spontaneously — and violently — Mega Evolve.

The story leans more mature than the usual Pokémon fare. With the return of AZ and his Floette, plus the looming presence of the legendary Zygarde, the narrative touches on themes of immortality, redemption, and the real human cost of "progress." It won't win literary awards, but it's genuinely more thoughtful than most entries, and the climax — a city-wide set-piece that pulls every thread together — is described by reviewers as spectacular.

The real-time battle revolution

This is the headline, and it's the best thing about the game. Z-A abandons turn-based combat entirely. When a battle begins, you don't watch from a menu — you're in the arena, moving your trainer in real time.

You position yourself physically. You run, dash and dodge around a battle space, locking onto targets and issuing commands to your Pokémon on the fly.
Moves have cooldowns. Instead of "select attack, wait for turn," each move recharges over time — so battles become about spacing, timing and choosing the right move for the moment.
Type matchups still matter. All the strategic depth of type advantages is intact — it's just wrapped in an action layer now. A well-timed super-effective hit while dodging a counter feels fantastic.

With the whole game set in one city, Game Freak needed a new structure to replace the traditional route-and-gym progression. Their answer is the Z-A Royale — and it gives the game a compelling day-night rhythm.

By day, you explore Lumiose and visit Wild Zones — sealed-off pockets of nature scattered through the city where wild Pokémon roam and can be caught with a well-aimed throw, Arceus-style, no battle required. There are over 200 Pokémon to track down.

By night, the city transforms. Designated Battle Zones light up and the Z-A Royale begins — a nightly competition where you take on other trainers, sometimes creeping up for a stealth first-strike. Wins earn points toward a Challenger's Ticket, which lets you battle the trainer ranked directly above you and climb the ladder. You start at the bottom, Rank Z, and grind your way up toward Rank A.

It's a smart loop: catch and build your team in the daylight, then test it under the neon at night. And after the credits, an Infinite Z-A Royale keeps the endgame rolling with rematches against the story's biggest characters.

For long-time fans, this is the emotional hook. Mega Evolution — the beloved X & Y mechanic that lets certain Pokémon temporarily transform into super-charged forms — returns for the first time since 2014, and Z-A treats it as the centre of everything.

In battle, a meter fills as your attacks land. Charge it up, and with the right Mega Stone you trigger the transformation for a big stat boost and access to more powerful attacks. Because it's real-time, it's balanced in a clever way: a Mega-evolved Pokémon can still be outmanoeuvred by a faster, smaller opponent if you get careless. It's a boost, not an "I win" button.

The best expression of this is the Rogue Mega Evolution boss fights. Throughout the story, wild Pokémon are Mega Evolving on their own and losing control, creating large-scale, cinematic real-time battles that genuinely test your reflexes and team coordination — and can even threaten your trainer directly. They're the highlight set-pieces, and they double as a showcase for the game's new Mega designs, which range from the striking (golden Mega Skarmory, glowing Mega Malamar) to the delightfully bizarre (long-legged Mega Starmie, bulbous Mega Victreebel).

On Switch 2, all of this shines: the game holds a stable 60fps, with impressive lighting on the rain-slicked night streets and particle effects during Mega Evolution that make it, arguably, the most technically current a Pokémon game has ever looked.

What holds it back

Z-A is bold, but boldness comes with rough edges. In the interest of an honest review, here's what to know before you buy:

One city gets repetitive. This is the most common criticism. Confining everything to Lumiose is a clever idea, but the concrete streets and small parks lack the variety of a traditional Pokémon region, and the city can start to feel samey well before the credits.
Exploration is limited. If you loved roaming the wide-open wilds of Legends: Arceus, the enclosed Wild Zones can feel like a step backwards rather than forwards.
A slow start. The opening hours ask for patience before the city truly opens up and the more interesting systems — like Mega Evolution — come online.
Some pacing and balance wobble. The mid-game loop can feel repetitive, and a few players found the story's momentum dipped between the big set-pieces. There's also minor buginess in the new battle systems here and there.

None of these undo the game — the combat and the climax more than earn the price of entry — but they're the difference between "great" and "the classic it could have been." For twenty-five years, one sentence has hung over every James Bond game like a bad review waiting to happen: "…but it's no GoldenEye."

Rare's 1997 shooter didn't just define Bond games — it defined a genre, and then it stood there, arms folded, daring everyone who came after to match it. Nobody did. A parade of movie tie-ins came and went, some decent, most forgettable, all living in the shadow of a Nintendo 64 cartridge.

So when IO Interactive — the Danish studio behind the brilliant modern Hitman trilogy — announced a Bond game, the reaction was equal parts excitement and dread. On paper it was perfect casting: nobody builds a stealth sandbox like IO. But "perfect on paper" is exactly what's been said about every Bond game since 1997.

Here's the good news, and we'll say it plainly: 007 First Light is the first Bond game in nearly thirty years that earns a place in the same conversation as GoldenEye. It launched on 27 May 2026 to an 88 on Metacritic and OpenCritic — the highest any Bond game has scored since 1997, and IO Interactive's best-reviewed game ever, edging past even Hitman 3.

This isn't a movie tie-in wearing a Bond costume. It's an origin story built by people who understand exactly why 007 has lasted sixty years — and how to make you feel it with a controller in your hands.

The story: Bond before he was Bond

The smartest decision IO made was refusing to adapt a film. Instead, First Light is an original origin story — a young, gifted, dangerously reckless James Bond, fresh out of Navy training and thrown into MI6 before he's ready.

It opens the way every good Bond opens: with a bang. Bond survives a helicopter crash on a Navy exercise, only to find himself tangled in an MI6 operation gone wrong — every agent sent in has been captured, and the newest, greenest recruit is suddenly the only one left standing. From there it becomes the story of how a talented, arrogant kid gets forged into the 00 we all know.

What makes it land is the supporting cast. This is a Bond surrounded by people who don't trust him yet, and watching them slowly come around is the emotional spine of the game:

John Greenway (played by Lennie James) is the standout — a weathered mentor handler running the classic "cynical veteran resents the cocky newcomer" arc, executed with far more heart than it has any right to have.
M, Moneypenny and Q all appear in early, formative versions of themselves — you're watching relationships that will define a career being formed for the first time.
Patrick Gibson's Bond is rebellious and arrogant in a way that works precisely because he hasn't earned the swagger yet. He's Bond in rough draft, and it's a genuinely great performance.

The campaign runs a tight, cinematic arc that most players finish in the 14 to 20 hour range depending on how much optional content you chase. It's globe-trotting, it's stylish, and — crucially — it understands that Bond is about tone as much as action: the classy social infiltrations, the exotic locations, the one-liners, the sense that our hero is always the most composed person in a very dangerous room.

Gameplay: Hitman's DNA, a brand-new licence

You can feel IO's fingerprints everywhere — but the fear that this would just be "Hitman with a tuxedo skin" turns out to be unfounded. First Light takes the studio's best instincts and reshapes them around a different fantasy.

Where Hitman dropped you into wide, non-linear sandboxes and said "figure it out," First Light is more guided and more cinematic. Levels still offer multiple approaches and hidden routes, but they're built to flow like set-pieces in a film rather than open puzzle boxes. It's a deliberate trade: a little less replayability for a lot more momentum and story.

What you actually do

Social stealth. The heart of it. You infiltrate glamorous locations, read rooms, and use conversation as a weapon. A new bluffing system lets you talk your way out of suspicion — steering wary guards into secure zones or into position for a takedown, purely through dialogue. It's the most "spy" that any Bond game has ever felt.
Bare-knuckle combat. The hand-to-hand fights are a genuine highlight — punchy, weighty, and brutal in the best Bond tradition. Critics singled these out repeatedly.
Gunplay and gadgets. When stealth breaks, the shooting is solid, and Q's gadgets add the expected 007 flavour without turning it into a pure action game.
TacSim missions. Standalone challenge missions that extend the game beyond the campaign — and IO has confirmed it's adding more of them post-launch, so the disc keeps growing.

Mechanically it's often described as an Xbox-360-era design philosophy — driving, shooting, punching and sneaking — but executed with a modern polish that makes each system feel intuitive and responsive. It rarely reinvents anything, but it does everything with real confidence.

And then there's the music. The soundtrack is worth the price of admission on its own:

Lana Del Rey performs the original theme, "First Light" — a gorgeous, franchise-worthy Bond song that opens the game and sets the entire tone.
The score, by The Flight, ranges from grand orchestral swells to Portishead-style trip-hop, and it deploys Bond's signature musical stinger at exactly the right moments.
It exercises restraint — it knows when to go big and when to let a quiet vista breathe. Several reviewers admitted to just standing still to listen.
